Menorrhagia is a gynaecological disorder which refers to heavy menstrual bleeding or bleeding for prolonged periods.

Normal menstrual cycle duration is of 21-35 days. The average bleeding phase in cycle is of 5 days (Range may vary from 2 to 7 days). The amount of blood flow is from 10 to 80 ml.

If the amount of blood flow is more than 80 ml or bleeding for more than 7 days then it is termed as Menorrhagia. If bleeding occurs in irregular periods like in between the cycles then it is termed as “Metrorrhagia”.


Menorrhagia is a symptom in itself which can occur due to many different reasons. The causes include –

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Uterine polyps
  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic ovarian disease
  • Intra uterine contraceptive devices
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Cancer
  • Bleeding disorders – Certain disorders in which blood clotting is impaired can cause heavy bleeding like von willebrand’s disease
  • Due to certain medications – For eg – intake of anticoagulants or hormonal pills can also cause heavy bleeding.
  • Due to other medical problems like Thyroid disease or Diabetes


Common Signs and symptoms include :-

  • Heavy bleeding causing soaking of sanitary pads at every 1 to 2 hours
  • Continuous bleeding for more than 7 days
  • Passage of clots with bleeding
  • Bleeding may be associated with pain in abdomen and lower back region
  • Tiredness, weakness
  • Anemia


In Ayurveda Excessive or prolonged menstrual bleeding has been termed as “Rakta Pradara”.

“Rakta – Blood”. Pradara word is derived from Sanskrit word “pradirana” which means “excessive excretion”.

All menstrual disorders like Menorrhagia, Metrorrhagia, Meno-Metrorrhagia and Dysfunctional Uterine bleeding can be covered under Rakta Pradara.

General Causes

  • Excessive intake of oily, salty, sour, spicy diet
  • Excessive intake of meat products, vinegar products or alcohol
  • Miscarriage
  • Overindulgence in sexual activities
  • Excessive physical exertion
  • Mental stress
  • Excessive weight loss


The causative factors lead to Aggravation of Vata and Pitta Dosha in the nutritive channels (Srotasa) related to Uterus and ovaries. Pitta Dosha causes Aggravation and increase in amount of Rasa and Rakta dhatus. Vata Dosha causes their excretion from the body in the form of heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding which is called as Rakta Pradara. Bleeding may be regular or irregular.

The main line of Treatment is to pacify Vata and Pitta Dosha. Rakta Prasadana and Rakta Stambhana to check heavy bleeding.

Diagnosing the cause of Menorrhagia is important as it helps in its specific treatment.


1. Single herbs – Nagkesar(Mesua ferrea), Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa), Amla (Phyllanthus emblica), Sariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia), Ashok(Saraca Asoka), Usheera (Vetiveria zizanioidis)

2. Herbal Powders – Pushyanug churna, Manjisthadi churna, Pradarantak churna

3. Rasa (Herbo mineral Preparations) – Chandraprabha vati, Pradarantak loha, Kamdudha Rasa, bolbadh Rasa, Pradararipu Rasa, Bolbadh Parpati, Vanga Bhasma

1. Maintain a healthy weight

2. Regular aerobic exercises like Brisk walk, Jogging, Swimming help in improving blood circulation of body and help in improving hormonal imbalance.

3. Excessive bleeding can lead to Iron deficiency in body therefore include iron rich foods in your diet like Apple, dried nuts, spinach, Broccoli,etc.

4. Include calcium and vitamin rich diet as these nutrients help in formation and development of red blood cells in the body like milk and dairy products, green leafy vegetables, tomato, nuts, Oats, etc.

5. Take 1 teaspoon of coriander seeds, soak it in a glass of water overnight, strain and drink the water in the morning. Continue this for 10 to 15 days.

6. Take 5 gms of Amla (gooseberry) powder with honey twice daily for 2 to 3 months. You can also amla in the juice form 10 ml daily

7. Take 2 to 3 teaspoons of fenugreek seeds and boil them in 2 glasses of water till 1 glass of water remaining. Take this decoction 2 to 3 times during menses. It helps in relieving from Abdominal pain and reduces the amount of menstrual bleeding.

8. Practise Regularly following Yoga poses for maintaining hormonal balance and improving the blood circulation towards uterus and ovaries – Padmasana, Gomukhasana, Paschimottanasana, Halasana,Sarvangasana.
